Officials and Governing

Royal officials were divided into 3 categories.

1.  Officials attached to the palace.

2.  Officials of the central administration.

3.  Officials of the provincial administration.

One of the most important position was Purohita , the chief advisor of the king.The king also had a board of ministers called Amati paheja .In central administration Senapati was a position second only to the king,and held by a member of nobility.This position and also the positions of yuvaraja (subking) played a major role in administration.

HISTORY OF ANURADHAPURA

Anuradhapura first became a capital in 380 BC under the king Pandukabhaya.During the rein of  king Devanampiyatissa  Buddhism reached SriLanka and established in this holy city Anuradhapura.Anuradhapura is Srilanka’s most sacred town from origins as a settlement in the 6^th century BC it was made capital in the 377 BC by king Pandukabhaya (437- 367 BC) who started the great Irrigation work on which it depended and named it after the constellation Anuradha.

Anuradha was the 1^st  general of king Vijaya, the legendary ancestor of the Sinhalese race.The city measured 52 km² and was maintained by at least 500 scavengers.The city was divided into several quarters.Forein traders lived in one quarter.Their houses were 2 or 3 stories.
